WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL PAGE OF CAPACITY FOR YOUTH

Historical Background:

Between 1989 and 2003, intermittent civil war in Liberia claimed the lives of more than 200,000 Liberians and further displaced a million others into refugee camps in neighboring countries.

The 2005 peaceful elections with the inauguration of the first female Head of State in Africa in 2006 ushered in a period of hopes and high expectations for recovery and development after decades of poor governance and destabilization.  The consequences of 14 years of brutal conflict constitute high challenges to Liberia’s recovery, reform and rebuilding

Our Vision:

A resilient, inclusive, and prosperous society where all people, particularly youth, women, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities, actively participate in and benefit from sustainable development opportunities.

Our Mission

To empower communities through capacity building, sustainable livelihood development, climate resilience initiatives, social inclusion, civic engagement, and innovative development solutions that improve quality of life and strengthen local ownership of development processes.

Lorpu H. Howard’s Experience with UYA

Lorpu H. Howard, a 35-year-old participant at the Weato Educational Foundation, describes the USAID Youth Advance (UYA) program as a “dream realized” for her as a businessperson and the spouse of an educated individual.

“I didn’t have the chance to pursue education extensively,” she recalls. “Having such an educated husband set a high standard for me.” Upon discovering the UYA program, which aims to train participants in reading, writing, speaking, and numerical understanding relevant to business and everyday life, Lorpu viewed it as a transformative opportunity. Enthusiastically, she joined the USAID Youth Advance program in June and has been fully committed ever since. “Today, I can write my name and my birth date, and fill out simple forms in just four months,” Lorpu proudly states.

“I am now able to accurately write both small and large numbers, which has aided me in managing my business finances.” Expressing her gratitude for the support she has received, Lorpu praises the UYA trainers. “They are incredibly patient and knowledgeable. They consistently repeat information to ensure that every student in the class comprehends”

A Journey of Transformation: Sam Sumo’s Success Story

Sam Sumo, a 24-year-old participant from the Marvelous School System Site, joined the USAID Youth Advance program struggling with basic literacy and numeracy skills. Reading seemed out of reach, and fundamental math concepts like addition and multiplication were challenging. However, after just three months in the program, he can now proudly say that he reads with confidence and solves basic math problems with ease.

The program has also provided him with a strong understanding of setting SMART goals, enabling him to distinguish between short-term and long-term aspirations. This newfound clarity has given him a stronger sense of direction for his future. Sam is deeply grateful to USAID for the life-changing support and knowledge he has gained through the program.
